TMJ TREATMENT/ THERAPY
There is no need to continue to live with pain when you can get relief from these symptoms naturally without drugs or surgery!
The most common TMD complaint is the TMJ headache, head and neck pain and Migraine Headache. The majority of migraines and TMJ headaches have various causes. The most common type of headache is the TMJ headache. It has been estimated that this type of headache accounts for 90 to 92% of all headache pain.
Most migraine headaches, have two common attributes: (1) tenderness of muscles of the head and neck and (2) clenching of teeth.
Dr. Gorman uses a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic devices along with home care equipment and exercises to provide patient pain relief. Each individual has a unique set of needs for correction so no one method provides the total resolution.
A thorough analysis of the function of your chewing system is the first step in diagnosis. Dr. Gorman uses a guided orthotic appliance to temporarily correct the bite, relax the muscles and stabilize the jaw joints. This upper appliance, made of clear, hard plastic, is necessary to help stabilize the jaw joints. It is designed to stop the destructive effects of clenching and grinding of teeth, to correct harmful chewing movements and is also used to alleviate jaw joint and muscle pain caused by these problems.
The good news is this: these migraine headaches, TMJ headaches and head and neck pain can be treated effectively. There’s no need to continue to live with pain when you can get NATURAL relief from these symptoms.
Many migraine medications cause significant adverse side effects. Also, there is a lack of evidence to support the effectiveness of these treatments, since most preventive agents used for chronic migraine have not been examined in well-designed double blind studies. Consequently, the management of migraine symptoms is challenging for clinicians, and other significant, clinically proven preventive treatments may fill an important therapeutic need. Studies have shown that “The longer a person stays on migraine medications, the worse the migraines become and the stronger the medications needed.”
As a highly trained dentist in the diagnosis and treatment of TMJ, my practice is highly focused on relieving the symptoms of TMD (temporomandibular joint dysfunction) — migraine headaches, head and neck discomfort, and TMJ tension headaches. Because of the multifaceted experience I’ve gained while working with experts in TMD treatment — physicians, ear nose and throat doctors, neurologists, chiropractors, physical therapists, dentists, and natural health practitioners — I bring a nature inspired, multidisciplinary approach to help you find true relief from your TMJ symptoms, tension headaches, migraine headaches, and head and neck pain.
THE COMPONENTS OF TMD
- Occlusal imbalance/ Bad bite (An inharmonious functional relationship between the teeth of the maxilla and those of the mandible).
- Imbalance among the muscles and joints of the jaw, head, and neck.
- Home care
FOR MAXIMUM RESULTS, ALL THREE COMPONENTS SHOULD BE INCORPORATED
Imbalanced occlusion/ Bad bite
Advanced Computer TMJ Functional Analysis
Successful diagnosis and treatment of your TMJ condition require state-of-the-art technology. We use the only computerized test that can accurately and objectively measure your occlusion/bite. Do not leave your bite to chance!
For years, dentists have had to use a large amount of guesswork in diagnosing dental occlusion. Imprecise tools such as articulation paper, waxes, and pressure indicator paste were all we had to assess and balance the forces of the bite with the muscles and joints of the head and neck. Most of these methods are not sensitive enough to detect simultaneous contact, and none measure both biting time and force- critical components in diagnosing TMD.
IMBALANCE among the MUSCLES and JOINTS of the JAW, HEAD, and NECK.
We use four modalities to BALANCE and relax the MUSCLES and JOINTS of the JAW, HEAD, and NECK.
helps break up scar tissue and adhesions and bring blood flow to the area. Ultrasound works on the deeper muscles and tissues, using penetrating sound waves and heat. Therapeutic ultrasound in physical therapy is a relatively low intensity technique that uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to speed healing in injured joint or muscle tissue. The frequency used is typically 1 to 3 MHz. At this frequency, the waves tend to travel through tissue with high water or low protein content, and to bounce off cartilage and bone. They are absorbed primarily by connective tissue: ligaments, tendons, and fascia (and also by scar tissue).
Therapeutic ultrasound may have two types of benefit: Thermal effects involve energy absorbed from the sound waves heating the tissue. If the tissue is heated to 40 to 45 °C (104 to 113 °F), it can enter a state of hyperaemia (increased blood flow), which speeds healing and reduces chronic inflammation; Cavitational effects result from the vibration of the tissue causing microscopic air bubbles to form, which transmit the vibrations in a way that directly stimulates cell membranes. This physical stimulation appears to enhance the cell-repair effects of the inflammatory response.
Helps relax the muscles, bring blood flow to the area, stimulate healing, and locate “trigger points” in the muscles. Trigger points are tiny knots or balls in the muscle that contain lactic acid and create pain wind-up loops. These trigger points refer pain from the muscle to other areas of the body. For example, a trigger point in the upper shoulder may refer pain into the jaw and/or face.
FDA cleared and clinically proven. Alpha-Stim delivers a dose of microcurrent that is almost undetectable. It helps break up the trigger points located through massage. Alpha-Stim sends a low electrical current that produces ATP (adenosine triphosphate, the major source of energy for cellular reactions), which relaxes and unwinds the trigger point. This action releases the build-up of lactic acid, and the pain both in that area and in the referring areas is reduced.
Also good for treating anxiety, insomnia, and depression.
- LOW LEVEL LASER THERAPY
Increases the healing time of the muscles and joints by 25-35%! The low-level laser uses a non-heat laser light to send a signal to the muscles and nerves to produce ATP – energy – thereby allowing the muscles to relax, increasing blood flow to the area, and reducing pain. Then, the laser sends a signal to the brain to help inhibit pain.
Certain wavelengths of light at certain intensities will aid tissue regeneration, resolve inflammation, relieve pain and boost the immune system. The exact mechanism is still being explored and debated but it is agreed that the mechanism is photochemical rather than heat-related.
